Exhaust Sound

Four months ago I finally had to retire my 2002 Z3 after 15 years and replaced it with a 2008 3.0i Z4. I really do like my "new" Z4 but, compared to my Z3, it is more refined (improved?) and lost some of the enjoyable light roadster rough around the edges feel my Z3 had.

One purely frivolous and completely without purpose things I would like to improve is the sound of the exhaust. The Z4 has a more refined exhaust sound than the Z3 and also does not provide that satisfying albeit subtle burble my wife and I loved when suddenly backing off the throttle.

I certainly do not want the raucous loud coffee can exhaust sound, or much worse, the stereo system replicated exhaust sounds like is available in some BMWs. I just want the real exhaust to have a little more authority to it.

Are there any exhaust system mods anyone has experience with that will accomplish what I am looking for? There are a lot of exhaust system mods advertised but I would like to hear from someone that actually implemented the mod.

Does anyone know what is the name of the missing connector part connected to the engine and part of the exhaust system? My exhaust noise went from low to loud after this part went missing? Is it a hose? An adaptor? I can see a part was there held together by a clamp.

I drove over an unforeseen large ditch and took off like the Dukes of Hazard General Lee car, then landed hard. As you know, for a Z3 Roadster because it sits low, a hard drop this is burdensome. Thereafter, I heard loud exhaust noises and when I opened the hood, I noticed a connector is missing. If you know or want to take a guess, I can email two photos to you.

Many thanks!

It depends on what engine the car has. The M54 engine cars don't have the secondary CATs and there's a spot to mount the Magnaflow muffler. I believe on the N52 engine cars you'd need to delete the secondary CATs to have room for the Magnaflow. If you just straight pipe where the OEM muffler is located on the N52 cars, none of the emissions stuff is touched.

Here's an option using a Magnaflow 11379 muffler. I having it done at Midas shop for $400.00 next week. If you check the thread there are more pictures but the first one is Post #16 by MPDD. [emoji106]

Lambo,

Did you do the muffler delete first? I would love to hear the difference between the muffler delete and the Magnaflow 11379.

I had the muffler delete done in April and I am thinking about the 11379... I need to understand the difference.

There are actually quite a few exhaust setups available. Most are cut and clamp, since the OEM exhaust is one piece from the headers back. As long as you leave the stock catted headers in place, you can do almost anything to the rest of the exhaust, and it won't be overly loud.

Supersprint, Eisenmann, Arqray, Remus, Billy Boat, Schmiedmann, Bastuck, Stebro, Milltek, and many others make exhausts for the standard Z4. I've ordered from Turner, ECS Tuning, Modbargains, Bavarian Autosport, and Schmiedmann.

I've owned many Supersprint products, and currently have a full Supersprint exhaust (headers, s-pipe + cats, y-pipe, single muffler) on my 3.0i. It sounds great, not too loud, but EQ-wise it's a little on the bassy side. I have Milltek header-back exhaust on my Porsche, and it's slightly bassy for my tastes too, so that seems to be the norm for aftermarket exhaust systems. Milltek does a great job with letting distributors know which products are in stock, whereas Supersprint almost never has Z4 products in stock and has had to make a batch every time I've ordered something. Supersprint's timelines are optimistic and rarely met from my experience. Supersprint products fetch a premium on the classifieds. Ideally, a used name-brand exhaust system will pop on the classifieds, which you can resell later for the same price you paid.

Many manufacturers say their exhausts provide power gains, but I wouldn't put much faith in their claims. Supersprint is the only setup that *may* increase power, since it incorporates a crossover / y-pipe. You'd need equal length catless headers to take advantage of the scavenging though.

Bottom line is there are a lot of setups available, and they (only) do exactly what you're asking about - make the Z4 sound like a sports car, to enhance the driving experience.

Choices are few and far between for non-M Z4 exhausts. A lot of people have something custom made. There is Eisenmann which is expensive but apparently sounds fantastic. I'm currently deciding between an M and a 3.0si and if I keep the latter I'm going to pop for an Eisenmann exhaust.

If you get the 3.0si, just delete the muffler in place of straight pipes. You can get most exhaust shops to do it for $200-$250. The 3.0si has the primary CATs on the exhaust manifold, a set of secondary CATs about mid-way back, and a small junction box/resonator just ahead of the diff. With all of that still in place the little muffler just knocks the level down a little bit and limits the burbling a bit.
