Hi all:

Well, I finally got the spare out of my '98 540i to measure the weight. It is the composite 19 style that came on the '97 to '98 540 sports.

The wheel had a Dunlop SP Sport 2000-E on it. TireRack reports that this tire weighs 22 pounds.

The wheel and tire combo came out to 43 pounds on my scale.

So I approximate the weight of the 17x8" composite 19 wheel at 21 pounds.

I used a digital scale with four corner load cells, so I guess its a fairly accurate reading.

I was surprised that it came out that light as an OEM wheel. I kind of knew it would measure out around that weight as soon as I was lifting it out of the trunk.

With the lightest aftermarket wheel options at 17 - 19 pounds, there does not appear to be a tremendous advantage for me to upgrade my wheels, especially given the costs of wheels for our cars.

fulltone,

that is a very light weight total. with my bbs rc 18 x8.5 and mich ps2, total weight is at 42.5. wheel is 18.5, tire is 24 lbs.

you said it - not worth spending anymore for such a little change, unless you're racing for time for a living...

This is one of the main reasons I will not sell the BBS style 5 wheels from the 528i sport- they are constructed the same way.

I'm actually interested in a set of staggered style 19 for the rears. I want to experiment and take the wider barrels of the style 19 and swap with the style 5 barrels. Then I will have staggered 17" style 5s. Turn around and sell the style 19s as a set of 4 17x8 and recover my investment or keep them for winter wheels if I want to get snow tires. Both styles have 34 bolts on 17" centers- I think It'd be a simple swap.

I think it's funny that the style 19s dont get as much love as the style 5s- they are very similar as far as performance/ construction. I was about to sell my style 5s for 750 bucks and I said no go, changed my mind.
