335i "ENGINE MALFUNCTION" Warning...

...Won't go away!

Maybe someone here has had a similar issue so I thought I'd check. Right now my dealer is still trying to figure it out.

Right after getting my car back from its second HPFP replacement, I was zooming down the road when the gong sounded and the "Engine Malfunction" warning came up. However, nothing seemed to be wrong with the car. I'd turn off the car and when I turned it back on the light would be gone, however it would always come back during hard acceleration.

I took it back to the dealer, who kept the car for about a week to replace the wastegate solenoids and to update the software, and gave it back to me. Only problem is, 5 minutes after leaving the dealership, the light was on again. Now the car is back in the shop and I'm waiting to hear what they come up with.

Here specifically is the work they just performed, which did seem to result in smoother acceleration and shifting, with less vibration and harshness (even if it didn't fix the actual problem):

PULL CODES, FOLLOW TEST PLAN, NO RESULT. APPEARS TO BE A WASTEGATE CONDITION. START PUMA CASE AS IT IS OUTSIDE OF SIN 11 13 07. AS PER TEST PLAN, CHECK VAC SYSTEM (PUMP, LINES AND SOLENOIDS) FOND BOTH WASTEGATE SOLENOIDS NEED REPLACING.

REPLACE BOTH WASTEGATE SOLENOIDS AND CLEAR HISTORY CODES. ROAD TEST CAR AND WASTEGATE FAULT RETURNED. AS PUMA SUGGESTED I STARTED SIB 111307, UPDATE SW ON CAR AND RECHECK AND UPDATE SW.
STILL WORKING ON SOFTWARE PROBLEM (3X UPDATED)
PERFORM DSC CALIBRATION AND STEERING ANGLE SENSOR, CLEAR.

Any input?

Sorry to hear of your problems. The first thing mentioned in the service section is “PULL CODES”. It doesn’t say what they found, but it seems they’re concentrating on the turbo system components (lines, wastegates, etc).

A few other things that can result in a limp mode are a malfunction in VANOS, crankshaft or camshaft sensors, high pressure sensor, or the fuel supply control valve.

Again, I think it comes down to the codes. Hopefully they’re on the right track. Good luck and keep us updated.

Thanks! No word yet; I miss my car. My Mazda 6 loaner, while OK, just doesn't deliver the same level of driving satisfaction. I usually look forward to my 40-minute daily commute. Right now... not so much!

I had the same problem

When I first got my 335i, I was in the shop every month for a engine malfunction light.

Solution: Take it to a different dealership. I had my hpfp changed however when I went to a diff one the found that the hoses that delivers the turbos had collapsed. maybe you have the same prob. Buenos suerte

Muchas gracias. I hope it doesn't come to that; the next closest dealer is 50 miles away! As it is, the closest one is a 30-mile drive. I swear, the difference in reliability between my '06 330i and '08 335i is night and day. This is not a car I would EVER own outside the warranty period! Even will full coverage it's a pain in the a$$.
