My 2013 X3 is 3 months old. Last night it would start for a sec then I would get a stop/start function error. The engine would start for a second then it would stop. Had to have it towed. This morning the engine cranks but will not start at all. I am getting the check engine warning and Fuel system error. Has anyone had this happen before? I will have it towed to the dealer on Monday.

That's certainly upsetting enough, nevermind that the vehicle is so new. Let us know what they discover. Since not many members reported about their X3's being towed, I'm curious if it was BMW Roadside Assistance that did it and whether it appeared that they had any problem getting the vehicle into neutral. I assume it was transported on a flatbed?

+1 on letting us know what the cause was. While it is not usual for a new car to have problems like this, it is not unheard of either. You may want to start documenting your interaction with the dealer's service center. Times, dates, who you talked to, subject of conversation, etc. Also keep a time line of your car's down time at the shop -- I am not familiar with the Texas lemon laws but it wouldn't hurt to just check them out on line to see where the benchmarks fall (i.e. days out of service, etc.) before you need the law. Now I am sure this is all overkill and your car will be fixed quickly and properly with no further problems -- but just in case it never hurts to be prepared. It is a lot easier to have that info at your fingertips now than trying to recall it later when you need it. Good luck!

I called BMW Roadside assistance around 7 pm but was on hold for about 30 minutes. I hung up and called a tow service myself and had the car towed to my house since the dealership had already closed. Am really pissed about being on hold for so long. I was able to put it in neutral because last night the car would start for about 2 seconds then would stop and gave a message that the auto start/stop was deactivated.

Since the car will not even start now I don't know how the tow truck which will be a flat bed will be able to put it in neutral. That will be their problem not mine.

Will update when I know what the diagnosis is.

This is the only way to get it into neutral now: (borrowed this from TKO88's thread)

3. Now that we had gotten this far it was time to evacuate the Air Conditioning system and get the X3 ready to move over to the body shop where the frame rack is. I was wondering how the heck we were going to move this thing sense it the paddle PRNDL all electric... How do we get it into Neutral? Well after a lot of Google searches and calls to the local BMW dealer I finally figured out how to put the trans into Neutral!
1. Remove trans shield (Cloth one in the middle)
2. There's an allen head bolt on the drivers side of the trans you must turn till it stops.

-The allen bolt you need to tighten is the one to the left (strait across to the left) of the "90" written on drive shaft.

Here is a link to the thread if you want to look at pics from when it was done. I doubt the tow truck operator would have any clue how to.

Interesting because: a) there is no mention of this in the Owner's Manual and b) there is a documented procedure that involves turning a bolt underneath the vehicle, after a panel is removed. Ref. p.25 in "02_F25 Powertrain.pdf" in this post:

This am I called BMW assist to confirm my 8 am pickup and to tell them again that the car does not start. I told them that I needed to have a flat bed and also to send someone with experience in getting my car to be put in neutral. I was on the phone with them 45 minutes. They sent a regular tow truck. I sent them away. I am seriously thinking about getting rid of my NEW BMW X3. This is way tooooo much trouble. I then called the service manager at my BMW dealership and it is now in his hands.

I just called BMW of North America customer relations and they said at this point there is nothing they can do for us. I also have a call into the general manager of the dealership and will speak with him.

I have decided that I do not want to keep this car for two reasons. A new car should not have a problem such as this and when it does, it takes a specialist to tow the vehicle.

Wow! What terrible treatment. So sorry for your problems. Don't blame you for your reaction.

We experienced the opposite when our new 2011 X3 went crazy with all sorts of malfunctions indicated. After just a few minutes, BMW Assist called my wife and noted they had received a trouble indication. Based on what they saw, they advised her to pull over and wait for a tow. Based on the vehicle driving behavior and the fact that it was a very short distance to home, she drove it into our driveway. BMW suggested that it be towed to the nearest dealer (in Colorado Springs). My wife requested that, instead, it be towed to the Denver dealer with whom we had purchased the vehicle. Probably 2 - 3 times as far. BMW said Okay. The tow operator arrived in another 45 minutes with a flatbed. He knew exactly where the tow hook was and, given the nature of our problem, simply started the vehicle and shifted into neutral (again, with the assurance of someone who knows BMWs, no fumbling).

The dealer in Denver (Schomp) kept it for 3 days, thoroughly examining it and consulting the the BMW tech support people (in New Jersey as I recall) and concluding that it had never been removed from Transport Mode (this was a PDC delivery). They corrected this and it has performed flawlessly ever since (now at 24,000 miles).

Finding the tow hook on the X3 isn't the problem (it's in plain sight and right on the bumper). Getting it into neutral isn't a problem either if the car isn't dead. The problem becomes when the car won't turn over or start there is no simple way to put the car into neutral! Just think if the car died on the highway or stopped at a red light. You are screwed if you don't have power.

Hopefully the HPFP failure is a random one. So, are you going to get rid of the X3 or let them fix it and keep it for a while?

I have had to replace 2 fuel pumps in 335's previously owned. I thought the fuel pump issue had been fixed but apparently not. I think the dealer should buy back my car for what I paid for it but I dont think that will happen. I cannot believe that I had a fuel pump failure in a 3 month old car. I am so lucky that it did not fail on a freeway.

#23 ·
You're kidding, right? Your dealer said that?

Hopefully Germany will have one in stock. I am wondering whether BMW is experiencing fuel pump issues again. Since my dealership cannot find one in the USA it makes me think that that there are issues again. I do hope that the pump is NOT on backorder in Germany. I asked my dealer to fax the written confirmation that they told me they received from Germany but I still have not received the fax.

There has never been a good supply of parts for the F25 in the US. Need a windshield? Comes from Germany. Need a critical electronic component? Comes from Germany. Need a window regulator? Comes from Germany. I would be more inclined to add the HPFP to the list of "why don't they stock these parts in the US?" than to worry that a rash of HPFP failures has dried up the US supply.

Is this Momentum? I wouldn't be surprised. I hope you have a decent loaner for the duration.

Then again, all BMW dealerships in Houston are under the same umbrella ownership. :thumbdwn:

Good luck!
